How a Professional Website Actually Brings In Customers

· 6 min read

A website earns its cost through enquiries. Four things decide whether it does that.

Clarity in the first five seconds

A visitor decides almost immediately whether you do the thing they came for. If your opening line is about your journey rather than what you sell and who you sell it to, they leave.

State the service, the market you serve and the location plainly. 'Business management systems for South African companies' outperforms 'empowering enterprise excellence' every single time.

Speed, especially on mobile data

Most South African visitors arrive on a phone, frequently on mobile data. Every extra second of load time costs you a proportion of them before they ever see your offer.

Compressed modern-format images, lazy loading below the fold, restrained JavaScript and a small number of well-loaded fonts do most of the work.

A separate page for each thing you sell

One long homepage listing every service cannot rank for any of them properly. Someone searching for a specific service should land on a page about that service, with its own title, its own heading and its own answers.

This is also how you learn what actually sells: individual pages produce individual data.

An obvious next step on every page

Call, WhatsApp, or a short form — visible without scrolling back to the top. Long forms asking for information you do not need yet cost enquiries.

Then make sure the enquiry lands somewhere with a follow-up process behind it. A lead that sits in an inbox for three days is a lead your competitor answered.
